Coming Home to Yourself in a World That Feels Unsettled

The peace we seek outside ourselves often begins with reconnecting to the wisdom within.

There are times when the world around us feels especially unsettled.

We hear the conflicting voices, witness the discord, navigate political upheaval, and experience the pressures and uncertainties of everyday life. Even when we aren’t directly involved in what’s happening, the energy of it can affect how we feel, think, and move through our days.

It’s easy to become consumed by what’s happening outside of us.

We can find ourselves worrying about tomorrow, trying to make sense of things we cannot control, or waiting for circumstances to change before allowing ourselves to feel peaceful again.

But what if we approached these times differently?

What if, rather than looking outside ourselves for stability, we began reconnecting with the place within us that is already grounded in wisdom, love, and peace?

Remembering Your Soulful Self

Beneath the roles we play, the responsibilities we carry, and the thoughts and emotions that often occupy our attention, there is a deeper part of us.

I call this our Soulful Self.

It is the part of us that knows who we are beyond our conditioning, expectations, fears, and external circumstances.

When we reconnect with this deeper aspect of ourselves, we begin to experience life differently.

We may not be able to change the circumstances around us, but we can change the place within ourselves from which we meet those circumstances.

We become less reactive and more present.

Less consumed by the noise and more connected to our own inner knowing.

Less focused on what we cannot control and more available to the peace, clarity, and wisdom that are accessible in this moment.

This isn’t about ignoring the realities of life or pretending everything is fine.

It’s about remembering that we have an inner resource that can support us through life’s uncertainties.

The Invitation to Come Home

Coming home to yourself is not another thing to accomplish.

It is an opportunity to pause, breathe, listen, and remember.

It is allowing yourself to step away from the constant demands of doing and managing and reconnect with simply being.

Sometimes it begins with one conscious breath.

Sometimes it comes through quiet reflection, meditation, or giving yourself permission to feel what you’ve been carrying.

And sometimes it happens when we gather with others who are also seeking a deeper connection with themselves.

The more we cultivate this relationship with our Soulful Self, the more naturally we can bring presence, compassion, harmony, and peace into our everyday experiences.

You don’t have to wait for the world to become peaceful to begin experiencing peace within yourself.

Presence is Power: Trusting the Transformation Within

An acorn does not look like an oak tree.

A caterpillar does not look like a butterfly.

And two tiny human cells do not look anything like the child they are becoming.

Yet within each of them is something extraordinary: the potential for transformation.

The acorn already carries within it the blueprint for the mighty oak. It doesn’t have to strive to become an oak tree. It needs the right conditions—soil, water, sunlight, time—and the willingness to respond to what is happening within it.

The caterpillar enters the chrysalis looking one way and emerges completely transformed.

And at the very beginning of human life, two microscopic cells come together and begin an unfolding so miraculous that, given the right conditions, they become a human being.

Nature doesn’t rush transformation.

It doesn’t question whether the process is working.

It doesn’t look around and compare itself to what has already emerged.

It simply participates in the process of becoming.

What if we did the same?

So often, when we find ourselves in a season of change, we want to know what’s coming.

What am I supposed to do next?

Am I making the right decision?

When will things finally make sense?

What if I fail?

What if I’m not enough?

We can become so focused on the future that we miss the only place where transformation is actually occurring: this moment.

This is where presence becomes powerful.

Presence doesn’t mean that we have all the answers.

It doesn’t mean that we know exactly where our life is taking us.

Presence means becoming willing to be here—with ourselves, with our uncertainty, with our grief, with our hope, and with whatever is asking to emerge.

The acorn doesn’t need to become the oak tree today.

The caterpillar doesn’t need to know what it will feel like to have wings.

And perhaps we don’t need to know exactly who we are becoming either.

Transformation often begins invisibly.

Think about the seasons of your own life.

There may have been moments when something ended before you knew what would begin.

A relationship ended.

A career changed.

A child grew up and needed you differently.

Your body changed.

Someone you loved died.

You reached a point where an old way of living simply no longer fit.

From the outside, it may have looked like loss, confusion, or even failure.

But something else may have been happening beneath the surface.

You were transforming.

Sometimes the most significant changes in our lives begin quietly.

Before the new relationship.

Before the new career.

Before the new purpose.

Before we know what comes next.

There is often a period of not knowing.

A sacred space between what was and what is becoming.

And that space can feel uncomfortable.

We may want to escape it.

But what if we learned to become present within it?

Presence allows us to hear what is emerging.

When we slow down enough to be present, we begin to notice things we couldn’t hear when we were constantly moving.

A quiet inner knowing.

A longing we’ve pushed aside.

A boundary that needs to be honored.

A dream that hasn’t died.

A truth we’ve been afraid to acknowledge.

A part of ourselves that is ready to come home.

Presence creates space for these things to surface.

And when they do, we have a choice.

We can return to the familiar because it feels safer.

Or we can become curious about the person who is emerging.

This doesn’t mean making impulsive decisions.

It means listening.

Breathing.

Noticing.

Trusting ourselves enough to take the next honest step.

There is power in the pause.

I have spent decades accompanying people through profound transitions—from the beginning of life in labor and delivery, through addiction and mental health recovery, and into the sacred threshold of hospice and end-of-life care.

Again and again, I have witnessed that life is not a straight line.

It is a continual unfolding.

There are beginnings.

Endings.

Thresholds.

Periods of uncertainty.

And moments when something within us shifts and we know:

I cannot go back to who I was.

That realization can be frightening.

It can also be deeply liberating.

Because perhaps the question isn’t:

“How do I get back to the person I used to be?”

Perhaps the question is:

“Who am I becoming now?”

You don’t have to force the butterfly.

A butterfly cannot be rushed out of its chrysalis.

An oak tree cannot be pulled upward by its branches.

And we cannot force ourselves into the next version of our lives simply because we are uncomfortable with where we are now.

Transformation has its own timing.

Our work is not always to make something happen.

Sometimes our work is to create the conditions that allow what is already within us to emerge.

To become still enough to listen.

Gentle enough to feel.

Courageous enough to tell the truth.

And present enough to recognize the next step when it appears.

This is why presence is power.

Not because being present gives us control over life.

But because presence gives us access to ourselves.

And when we are connected to ourselves, we are better able to meet whatever life is asking of us.

Perhaps you are in a chrysalis season right now.

Perhaps something in your life has ended and you don’t yet know what is beginning.

Perhaps you are carrying an acorn of possibility that you haven’t yet planted.

Or perhaps, without realizing it, you have already begun to grow.

You don’t need to have the whole path figured out.

You don’t need to know exactly what the finished version looks like.

For today, you might simply pause.

Take a breath.

Put your feet on the ground.

And ask yourself:

What is asking to emerge within me now?

Then listen.

Not for the entire answer.

Just for the next small truth.

Because transformation doesn’t happen all at once.

It happens moment by moment.

Breath by breath.

Choice by choice.

And sometimes, the most powerful thing we can do is simply become fully present for the becoming.

You are not behind.

You are not broken.

You are becoming.

And there is power in being present for the journey.
